Geo

Social Media for Change

Client: Geo
Agency: Superframe

Introduction

Geo is a mission-driven, open-source platform built to support activists and grassroots organizations working toward social and environmental change. The challenge with this project was to create a non-profit and ad-free platform free from the noise of misinformation and invasive advertising. Geo’s goal was to give users control over their data, their communities, and their voices.

The initial release, built as a browser-based experience, garnered interest from niche communities but struggled to attract and maintain new users. Early feedback showed audiences that wanted better filtering, security, and control over their accounts. This meant refactoring UX for better transparency, safety, and simplicity.

Problem

The original product had heart but lacked accessibility. It ran as a web app with limited support for notifications, offline access, or native OS integration. Users cited frustration with the editing tools, inconsistencies in the messaging system, and uncertainty around privacy settings.

Usage patterns revealed friction in the onboarding process, limited discoverability of local content, and a general lack of polish that created hesitation among potential community leaders and contributors.

Without native apps in app stores, Geo was difficult to share, promote, or grow through grassroots or word-of-mouth, the very channels it was built to support.

Process

The redesign effort began with one goal: deliver a full-featured, secure native app experience. Everything had to be designed with the user in mind, from the UX patterns to data handling.

User research came first. Interviews were conducted with activists, and organizers, people using Geo to promote events, protests, mutual aid, and awareness campaigns. These sessions revealed specific blockers, including the ability to block users, a lack of visual hierarchy in feeds, and difficulty posting media-rich content.

Personas and journey maps were built to guide feature prioritization. Mobile-first behavior analysis identified key moments that drive retention in community apps, quick joins, familiar chat interfaces, and real-time notifications. Wireframes were developed to streamline account creation, content posting, event discovery, and group messaging.

Prototypes were also built and tested across both web and mobile environments, iterating with feedback from both technical contributors and non-technical community users. Accessibility and multilingual support were considered early in the design system, ensuring that Geo was well positioned to scale.

Result

The result was a fully native mobile application, available on both online and on the Apple App Store. Designed specifically for the needs of community, the new app emphasized clarity and privacy at every turn.

Key features included:

  • Improved Messaging: Real-time group chats and comments with clear and intuitive moderation tools.

  • Event and Project Sharing: A streamlined content creation interface made it easier to publish updates, organize actions, and promote creative work.

  • Privacy-First Architecture: All tracking was opt-in. No ad systems, no third-party analytics bloat. Data stayed in the user’s hands. Users could now be blocked and reported.

  • Improved Content Moderation: Users could now follow feeds, bookmark posts, and follow individual contributors.

Success

With the launch of the native app, Geo’s usage metrics saw a sharp improvement. Daily active users increased, engagement per session went up, and users reported higher satisfaction with the platform’s usability. Push notifications enabled more immediate action around time-sensitive campaigns, and new messaging tools allowed for better collaboration.

The project proved that it's possible to build a purpose-driven social platform that functions on par with commercial alternatives while remaining true to its mission.
