The Median Is Not the Message

The Median Is Not the Message

We are Marginalizing the Most Important Advancement in Decades

We aren’t talking about better software. This is a paradigm shift on who can execute a vision, at what scale, and at what cost. The kind of shift that arrives once in a generation. Maybe once in a century.

And we are marginalizing it in real time.

Why? Because we’re drowning in its worst output. The zone is flooded. Recycled ideas, fantasy retreads, last years design patterns.

But we’ve made a category error. We’re judging the medium by the floor, not the ceiling.

The Category Error

Nobody judges oil paint by Sunday painters. Nobody declared photography dead because there were a million identical sunsets.

Every medium has an “average” and average has always been in poor taste. The difference with AI art? Mediocre art used to stay hidden. Bad oil paintings went to the attic. Bad demo tapes went in a box under the bed.

AI is published by default. Algorithms love it. Zero cost to make. Zero cost to post. Pumped into every feed at industrial scale. You are not seeing what is possible. You are witnessing people’s instinct to pick low hanging fruit and act as though it were a banquet.

“Slop” is exhaustion, with cardboard ideas and a system that rewards noise. It is a platform problem wearing an art costume. Don’t confuse the two.

We Already Lived This

When WordPress themes hit, the excitement was the same. Free websites! Anyone can publish! The gates are open.

What we got was a decade of uninspired designs. Thousands of identical sites. Same large header. Same three-column layouts. The web got much bigger and much blander at the same time.

But nobody concluded web design was dead. Nobody called the medium slop. The best digital work of that era was built in the same years. The ceiling kept rising.

Audiences were never tired of design. They were tired of boring layouts. Same disease, different medium.

The Ceiling

While the discourse argues about ownership and art without soul, the work is getting made. And it’s working as advertised, with the same passion and precision as the agency work we have all come to respect.

During the 2025 NBA Finals, prediction platform Kalshi ran a 30-second spot that looked like a big-budget brand commercial. Made entirely with AI, in two days, with generation costs under $2,000. It streamed during Game 3 and pulled over 3 million views in a week. The spots around it likely cost hundreds of thousands and took months. That’s not a cost saving. That’s a different physics.

Credit card company Coign shipped a fully AI-generated national TV spot finished in half a day, at under 1% of a traditional shoot’s budget.

Popeyes answered a McDonald’s product launch with an AI-produced diss track, concept to finished video in under three days. That’s what speed buys. You can answer a cultural moment while it’s still a moment.

H&M built 30 hyper-realistic digital twins of real models, generating scalable assets across every channel, with the real talent keeping ownership of their twins and getting paid.

The gap between a challenger brand and a category leader used to be measured in production budget. That gap just closed. In the right hands, a two-person team can now go head-to-head with a holding company. The idea wins. Not the invoice.

Cheap is nice, but that is not the story. Speed means cultural relevance. Scale means a thousand of options instead of compromise. And none of this works without the kind of experience that comes with decades in the industry.

The ceiling isn’t hypothetical. It aired during the Finals.

The Vicious Cycle

Instead of rejoicing in perhaps the greatest advancement in the history of art, here’s the loop we’re building. Judge the medium by the volume. Brand it as slop. Accomplished artists turn away. The worst examples becomes the only visible output. Frame confirmed.

The community is robust and you can’t stop the signal. Critics don’t kill mediums. They just stall progress. Photography survived this. The printing press survived this. Web design survived this. AI survives this too.

The only question is how many artists sit on the bench for the most important advancement of their careers.
